Prevention Education
In
the year 1997, a special program , "AIDS Prevention Education
through teachers' and Students (APETS)" executed by WORD
aims at creating awareness on preventing AIDS by educating
the teachers and students of 69 schools in Salem, Erode, Namakkal
and Coimbatore Districts. In this program, a core group of
special teachers, peer educators as volunteers are made in
charge of ensuring continued activity in order to disseminate
knowledge and to sustain the programs. Each 69 school is given
a set of 25 multi coloured bilingual ( English/Tamil) flip-charts,
teachers' reference manual either in Tamil or English and
pamphlets for peer educators for facilitating each one teach
one process. The work plan/ strategy as follows:
Stage1:
Sensitisation and Specialization (2- 3 Hrs)
In
this stage all teachers handling classes IX-XII are addressed
by the resource persons. During the same program the resource
persons will also identify teachers from the group who show
greater interest and motivated in creating AIDS awareness
and they are known as Special Teachers. These special teachers
act as Co-ordinators and are accountable for the implementation
of the APETS program in the respective schools. The special
teachers now undergo a further intensive workshop. They are
then requested to select students from each section from IX-XII
who show exceptional leadership qualities coupled with motivation.
They are known as peer educators.
Stage-2:
Demonstration (2 Hrs)
During
this stage, the special teachers conduct a workshop for the
peer educators selected by them during stage 1 with the help
of the NGO.
Stage
3: Performance (2 HRs)
In this stage the peer educators who have undergone training
under the special teachers during stage 2 will now educate
the other fellow students under the supervision of the NGO
and the special teacher.
