In the early 80's, there were no exclusive organisations working in the area to represent for the burning problems against women and their development in the society. A personal experience by Mrs. D. Shanthi in her life realized her that the need of a women's organisation to work for the development of women in a male dominant society at that time. It led to start an organisation to uplift the socio-economic, cultural development of women in the society. A group of five social minded women from different religion led by Mrs. D. Shanthi started the organisation in 1985 to stand up for the issues and needs especially to the weakest of the weak and the poorest of the poor underserved families. WORD has got the statutory recognition in the year 1988. Since then, WORD has spread our activities in all spheres and our integrated approach helped the over all development of women, children and the society. Moreover WORD is an organisation of women, for women and by women.
