Community
Based HIV/AIDS Care and Support Programme
With the financial and programmatic support from Palmyrah
Workers Development Society (PWDS), Marthandam & India
HIV ALLIANCE, New Delhi, this programme is being implemented
from March 2002.
This
programme is covering Pallipalayam block of Namakkal district.
Espousing and emphasizing participatory approaches in the
beginning more particularly participatory Community Assessment
method [PCA] which involves the communities and most importantly
people living with HIV/AIDS [PLHAs, FAAs, CIAs and CAAs]among
the public in the target areas.
Steps
are being taken to fulfill their physical, social, economical
and psychosocial problems. The CAAs are being given nutritional,
medical, educational and recreational support. More care has
been taken for their right confidentially, access to heath,
education, nutrition and health services that improve their
quality of life. We have adopted and implementing an integrated
approach in programming to ensure that a community and home
based care and support programme is sustainable and responsive
to the diverse case of PLHAs, FAAs, CAAs and CIAs. Orientation
and sensitization programmes were arranged for the communities
- To recognize and respect the PLHAs, FAAs, CAAs and CIAs
different cultural and social economic problems
- To appreciate, respect and understand and built upon
their knowledge, skills and abilities.
- To respect their emotional needs and developing their
self esteem.
- To ensure their participation and involvement for working
with PLHAs, FAAs, CAAs and CIAs and to develop their skills
to facilitate the participation with the affected.

Home Care Guides have also been trained from the community
on HIV/AIDS issues, self and home based care modules. They
will help the PLHAs/ CAAs and FAAs in their respective areas.
They will refer cases to the staff team to extend our services.
Vocational/ Job skills training, providing working Capital,
effective home based care, offering emergency relief for unfortunate
circumstances, Leadership training for positive persons, providing
nutrition supplement, nutritious food demo, medical care for
common Opportunistic Infections (OIs), counselling services
are the core strategies in this program.
A
good referral system have been developed with the co-working
NGOs, primary medical department, Government Hospital, Erode,
IRTT medical College, Perundurai, Government Hospital for
Thoracic Centre, Tambaram, Government ARV Centre, Namakkal
VCTC and PPTCT centres to avail quality STD/HIV care and support
for the needy. Efforts were made to make available the ARV
drugs for the needy HIV/AIDS infected persons.
Till September 2007, 205 CAAs, 25 CIAs, 212 PLWHAs and 216 FAAs were reached through the wide range of lost cost community based care and support activities under this project. |
