Sustainable Agriculture

With the support from the Low External Input and sustainable agriculture (LEISA) (Kudumbam) Network, Trichy this innovative program has been carried out from 1997 with the optimal utilization of rural technology.

As a continued activity of sustainable agriculture program with the support of Kudumbam (LEISA) Network- Trichy, from April 2005 a new project entitled, "Empowering the dry land Farming Communities through Sustainable Agriculture Alternatives" is being implemented by WORD as a Nodal agency with the fun ding assistance from Siemenpuu Foundation, Finland with seven other NGOs in Erode, Coimbatore and Dindigul District.

The activities are being implemented through the selected farmers and base-line survey at the NGO level and done the Participatory Planning Matrix (PPM) with the farmers and have done the crop calendar at the earlier stage of the project. The farmers along with the NGO field staff have been given a wide range of hands-on trainings in the demonstration sites related to the project activities. The trainings are back-supported with series of follow-up trainings, monthly review meeting and Quarterly meeting with NGO heads.

The activities include Vermi Compost Production, Preparation and use of herbal decoction, Multiplication on Seed Varieties, Nursery Raising, Tree planting, Improving water table, Improving Soil Fertility, Distribution of earth worms, Campaign on organic farming techniques.
